Climate extremists have already done an impressive job of getting the mainstream media on their side, and now they are exerting their considerable influence over social media as they attempt to erase any type of evidence that pokes holes in the global warming narrative.
The major social media networks have an alarming amount of control over the national conversation. As Climate Depot points out, many of these firms are situated in super-liberal San Francisco, and those who work there tend to lean to the left. This gives liberals quite an advantage and puts them in a position where they can simply keep others out of the public debate.
There is no question that many people working for these firms have too much access and control. For example, Twitter has found itself at the center of a huge controversy after it was revealed that 1,100 of its contractors and other insiders had access to a so-called “God Mode” that gave them nearly full control over users’ accounts and content. This backfired in spectacular fashion when someone recently hacked the accounts of high-profile users like Barack Obama and Elon Musk, using their accounts to ask for Bitcoin handouts and then getting them locked down entirely.
Twitter has already been accused of suspending and shadow-banning Trump supporters and other conservatives while throttling tweets and hashtags that do not align with their leftist views. Of course, we don’t see such action being taken against liberals when they are participating in bullying or using hate speech.
Facebook, meanwhile, has been going out of its way to regulate user content, and as usual, conservative viewpoints are getting the short end of the stick. In addition to censorship, some voices are being outright de-platformed, and it’s hardly a coincidence that many of those are people who have challenged the left’s views on climate change and other issues.
Facebook has already banned its users from sharing — and even viewing — factual information that qualified climate scientists have created. Some leftists recently sent an open letter to the co-chair of Facebook’s Oversight Board asking that they censor opinion pieces challenging the notion of manmade climate change.
YouTube is also a big part of the problem, demonetizing channels of conservatives who dare to question climate change. They have also added “fact checks” to videos that cast doubt on the idea of manmade global warming. These essentially serve as a propaganda tool to get people to buy into their false narrative. Not surprisingly, they only present one side of the story – their side.
One YouTube Fact Check stated: “Global warming, also referred to as climate change is the observed century-scale rise in the average temperature of the Earth’s climate system and its related effects. Multiple lines of scientific evidence show that the climate system is warming.” This blurb was taken from Wikipedia, which is known for spreading hoaxes and general unreliability given the fact that anyone can edit it.
After having his tweets “fact checked” by Twitter recently, President Trump announced a major crackdown on social media to ensure that all Americans have their right to free speech protected online.
He said in a recent tweet: “Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservative voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen.”
Before signing an executive order stripping Big Tech of unfair immunity, he said: “They’ve had unchecked power to censor, restrict, edit, shape, hide, alter, virtually any form of communication between private citizens and large public audiences.”
It remains to be seen what effect these moves might ultimately have on social media censorship, but it is encouraging to see that the leader of the free world is aware of this serious problem and willing to take action on it.
