The other day in between segments, Sean Hannity of Fox News appeared to take a pot shot at fellow Fox News host Tucker Carlson for criticizing Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos over his crony capitalistic ways. But Tucker is right: Bezos is a grotesque crony capitalist who engages in monopolistic, child-exploitative business practices that are unjustifiable and potentially criminal.
Seemingly addressing Carlson’s criticism of Bezos for amassing $13 billion in a single day, Hannity went on a rant at the beginning of his program about how “people can make money” when “they provide goods and services people want, need and desire.”
“That’s America,” Hannity bellowed. “It’s called freedom, capitalism, and as long as it’s honest, right?”
The whole thing seemed directed at what Carlson had said just a few minutes prior on his show about Bezos specifically, though Hannity later claimed that his monologue was a mere defense of “honest capitalism.”
But the fact that Hannity sees Bezos as operating honestly is perhaps even more concerning than had he left the initial rumor about his criticism being directed at Carlson intact.
“Amazon operates multiple monopolies and unfairly stifles competition,” writes Bay Buchanan for CNS News.
“It uses its incredible power to crush smaller companies and ensure they can never compete against the tech giant. It also censors conservatives and relies on Chinese child labor.”
True free-market capitalism, at least the type undergirded with a moral compass, would never allow a company like Amazon to flourish. It would instead favor companies that pay their employees living wages, for instance, rather than rely on underage children to manufacture cheap garbage products around the clock like Amazon does.
It also would not favor companies that pretend to be distributors while directing customers towards their own products, which Amazon also does. During the height of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) plandemic, Amazon was caught steering customers towards its own branded products and away from other products by hiding the two-day “Prime” shipping option from its competitors’ product listings.
“Amazon products were advertised with faster delivery times while the quicker delivery times of third-party sellers were hidden,” Buchanan adds. “Bezos’ behemoth claims this was an honest mistake caused by its algorithms, but isn’t it funny this mistake benefited Amazon?
Another area where Amazon takes advantage of and disenfranchises its competitors is in the world of media streaming. The Amazon Fire stick, which currently holds a dominant market share, does not permit competing services like WarnerMedia’s HBO Max and NBCUniversal’s Peacock to appear on it, even though the Fire stick is supposed to be a media provider.
A similar tactic is used by Facebook and other social media tech companies, which pose as content providers while acting like content creators, all to unfairly enrich themselves at the expense of their opposition.
In the case of Amazon, the company routinely engages in crony tactics that keep its competitors from playing on the same level field. It unscrupulously squelches all competition through malicious tactics that, were Hannity to take a closer and more honest look, would reveal themselves as the antithesis of honest capitalism.
Amazon’s Twitch also banned President Donald Trump from its platform for engaging in “hateful conduct,” demonstrating the censorship side of Amazon’s business tactics. It is all about control and manipulation, neither of which are congruent with honest capitalism.
“No conservative is opposed to people making a lot of money the honest way,” Buchanan concludes.
“American prosperity is due to the entrepreneurship and free market competition of its citizens. Yet we should question when one man amasses so much wealth and power with unfair business practices. Monopolies built on forced labor do not represent the American way.” And greed is evil.
